a 2004 survey from the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM ABEM American Board of Emergency Medicine ), approximately 33.6% of respondents nationwide indicated they personally perform bedside emergency ultrasound. That statistic has continued to increase -- in 1992, only 8.7% of respondents indicated they personally use ultrasound in the ED, according to ABEM. With that in mind, CEP appointed a task force comprised of three physicians who are emergency ultrasound fellowship-trained to design the program and its curriculum. Several studies have indicated that emergency ultrasound at the bedside is beneficial in rapidly diagnosing a variety of conditions, such as abdominal pain Abdominal pain can be one of the symptoms associated with transient disorders or serious disease. "CEP is proactively taking steps to train all of our physician Partners in emergency ultrasound, which will improve patient care and allow us to obtain results more quickly," said Prentice Tom, MD, CEP's Chief Medical Officer. "CEP strives to stay at the forefront of technology to continually raise the bar for emergency medicine in California."

"The course will greatly enhance our clinical skills as this modality is becoming more commonplace in Emergency Departments," said Rita Sweeney, MD. "Our goal is to educate and train all CEP providers in emergency ultrasound during the next three to five years. We look forward to instructing this course and playing a role in further improving emergency medical care in our communities."

The two-day course meets the America College of Emergency Physicians guidelines for credentialing. Since 1999, training in emergency ultrasound has been required in every emergency medicine residency program, and is part of the American Board of Emergency Medicine exam.
