Regulations were put into place and a certification exam was developed. The CAC decision to allow the deadline to stand was made with the following exemptions: The electricians who need the necessary on-the-job experience required for certification are exempt if: 1. Of the estimated 55,000 to 70,000 working electricians in the state, approximately 23,000 have taken the exam with 18,000 passing. "Those electricians required to be certified should apply to do so quickly. Their contribution to California's economy is vital. We don't want to see any electricians out of work and we will do what we can to put into effect the CAC's decision, including extending the test contract," added Rea.
