California Culinary Academy Purchases Mayfair Hotel Property and Completes First Phase of Student Housing Program.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1997--California Culinary Academy (Nasdaq:COOK) Monday announced its purchase of San Francisco's Mayfair Hotel property, which in addition to the Hotel Leslie acquired in September, completes the first phase of management's long-term, multi-phased student housing program.

When fully occupied, the two properties will accommodate 266 full-time students Full-Time Student

Located in San Francisco's Route 101 corridor at 626 Polk St., the Mayfair Hotel is directly across the street from the academy's main campus. After a phase out of resident hotel guests, the new dormitory will accommodate 136 full-time academy students.

Acquiring student housing was announced at last year's shareholders meeting as a strategic initiative. High occupancy rates, the lack of affordable housing, and the lack of academy-controlled residence halls, have been a deterrent in attracting younger students, as well as students from out of state and the international marketplace.

, stated: "The strategic use of the rooms will allow us to balance the seasonality of our business by making rooms available as an incentive during off periods of enrollment. This strategy, along with appealing to a new demographic population of younger and international students, should give us an incremental Additional or increased growth, bulk, quantity, number, or value; enlarged.

In conclusion, Keogh said: "In addition to incremental revenue, the addition of student housing rounds out our offerings to students, giving them a complete educational atmosphere similar to most high quality universities. This also improves our competitive standing with the two other nationally recognized schools in the Northeast."
