California Community Foundation's 1999 Annual Report Takes Bold Look at L.A. Development of the Past Century.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 1999--

The California Community Foundation today announced the release of its 1998 - 1999 annual report, "Postcards from the 20th Century."

The report features essays by local writer Daniel Nussbaum, frequent contributor to the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles magazine, and Jane Pisano, senior vice president of external relations for the University of Southern California and member of the California Community Foundation's Board of Governors. An introduction by Jack Shakely, the California Community Foundation's president, ties the themes of the report to the foundation's work in the communities of Los Angeles.

The images include vintage postcards featuring Los Angeles landmarks and contemporary photographs of the same communities, taken by Pulitzer Prize winner and Los Angeles Times staff photographer Clarence Williams. The publication's unique design juxtaposes the color postcard images and black and white photographs to striking effect.

The aim is to highlight the changing face of Los Angeles while also emphasizing the rich diversity and history of Los Angeles communities, of which the California Community Foundation has been a part for nearly 85 years.

As head of the Los Angeles 2000 Committee in the mid-1980s, Pisano led a citizen effort to plan for the city's futures predict discrete events, we can see the generctions about Los Angeles -- which so many have called "The City of the Future" -- from sources as wide-ranging as real estate tycoon Henry Huntington and science fiction writer Philip K. Dick.

Founded in 1915, the California Community Foundation administers more than 900 individual charitable funds and holds assets totaling more than $500 million. In the 1998 - 1999 fiscal year, the foundation awarded more than $59 million in grants to Los Angeles County nonprofit organizations.
