 of $21.6 million in federal funding grants to 34 local service partnerships with over 1,900 AmeriCorps members.

These public and private organizations are participating in the fifth year of the national service, and were selected through a highly competitive state grants process. The monies will be used to fund the service delivery of the California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  AmeriCorps program in the areas of education, public safety, health and human needs and the environment.

Dr. Linda Forsyth said, "The disbursement of these funds will provide the resources needed for AmeriCorps members to continue to do the valuable work begun in the first four years: from reducing juvenile crime; providing after-school mentoring to youth at-risk of dropping out of school; feeding the homeless; and restoring our state's natural resources. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. AmeriCorps is the national service initiative started in September of 1994 that engages thousands of Americans in a domestic Peace Corps throughout our nation's urban and rural communities. In exchange for one to two years of results-driven service, AmeriCorps members receive an education award to assist in financing their college education or vocational training, or pay back their student loans.
