"I went for a design that would evoke reserved, high society, and at the same time flatter Sharon," says Sommerfield. "We wanted something with simple elegance to enhance Sharon's natural beauty."

Michael Jon Couture was selected after the first lady reviewed a portfolio of Sommerfield's work, in preparation for a KMAX-UPN (Sacramento Channel 31) feature airing Feb. 28 between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on his recent success as a local fashion designer. Sommerfield has been involved in the apparel industry for over 25 years, but in the last five years took a serious turn toward designing. His evening gown evening gown

He draws from a variety of sources for design ideas, and admits that a good fabric will often spark his imagination.

Sommerfield spent over 70 hours on the design and creation of the first lady's dress, including an initial interview and sizing at his studio near Laguna, in South Sacramento. A final fitting was done a week later in the first lady's capitol office.

"Sharon Davis was a delight to work with," said Sommerfield. "After a short consultation regarding fabric color she essentially said, `Michael you're the designer, design me a dress.' For a creative designer like myself she was a dream client." Sommerfield, who is known for his highly refined tailoring and his unique ability to handle all creative aspects from conception to completion, made only a minor final adjustment to the gown to meet the first lady's taste.

After wearing the gown in Washington, D.C. the first lady will donate it to charity. Interested charities should contact the first lady's office in Sacramento.
