The committee, chaired by Senator Marta Escutia (D-Los Angeles), heard testimony from blood center officials, blood patients, donors, hospitals and doctors statewide about the reimbursement crisis and the potential implications of allowing the blood centers to continue to operate with insufficient funding.

"I applaud the State Senate Health and Human Services Committee for recognizing the importance of inadequate reimbursement and the detrimental impact it is having on blood centers across the state," said Cathy Bryan, spokesperson for BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) The field in an e-mail header that names additional recipients for the message.  BCC estimates, 14 of the 18 state blood centers are experiencing financial hardships because they are not receiving adequate reimbursement from HMOs and the state government for the services they are required to perform, including blood screening and testing.

"Because blood centers are not fully reimbursed for the government mandated safety procedures, the additional expenses have been absorbed by the centers," Bryan said. "These expenses, in addition to already high operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales , have been draining resources that should be used to host blood drives, increase donor recruitment and safeguard blood supply."

California's blood centers, Bryan said, are looking forward to working with state legislators to explore new ways to sufficiently reimburse re·im·burse
