Calif. students rejecting new enrollment proposal.


SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  (AP) -- Preliminary figures show that most of the 7,600 students who were deferred from the University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States).  for two years because of budget cuts are choosing other options.

Susan Wilbur, director of undergraduate admissions for the UC system, said the university viewed the number of students accepting the offer as "large"--considering that it is a new program.

This is the first time UC had broken its pledge, based on the state's 1960 education Master Plan, to accept all qualified California high-school graduates.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed waiving community--college fees for students diverted from the UC system. The Legislature so far has not authorized the funding.
