BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 2000

Caliber Learning Network, Inc. (Nasdaq: CLBR CLBR Costa Linda Beach Resort (Aruba) ) and Teachers College, Columbia University Teachers College, Columbia University (sometimes referred to simply as Teachers College; also referred to as Teachers College of Columbia University or the Columbia University Graduate School of Education  today announced the start of a major live, Internet-based initiative to prepare U.S. teachers for the classroom of the future.

&uot;Early childhood education in America needs to be strengthened. One of the most important ways to accomplish this is by creating a corps of mature teachers to become leaders and mentors. Preparing teachers for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS NBPTS National Board for Professional Teaching Standards ) certification is an excellent way to accelerate this effort,&uot; said Dr.Arthur Levine, President of Teachers College, Columbia University.

The program will support teachers seeking National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification. Phase one will focus on those teachers preparing for the Early Childhood (ages 3-8) Generalist gen·er·al·ist

&uot;Caliber's state-of-the-art broadband Internet See broadband.  technologies, and live, interactive distance learning platform now make Teachers College expertise easily accessible to teachers all over the country,&uot; said Dr. Peter Cookson, Director, The Center for Educational Outreach and Innovation, Teacher's College, Columbia University Columbia University, mainly in New York City; founded 1754 as King's College by grant of King George II; first college in New York City, fifth oldest in the United States; one of the eight Ivy League institutions. .

&uot;NBPTS certification is the most rigorous voluntary professional development credential any teacher can have,&uot; Cookson noted. &uot; With Caliber as a partner, we can reach more teachers faster and help them achieve this elite status,&uot; he added.

During the initial program, an anticipated 300 teachers in 16 cities will gather twice a month at computer-equipped classrooms where they will participate in live, interactive instruction via the Internet originating from a Caliber Express Studio in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

The NBPTS is an independent, non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes.  whose mission is developing and setting standards for classroom teaching excellence. The U.S. Department of Education has set a goal of 105,000 NBPTS-certified teachers by 2004. Currently, there are only 4,799 NBPTS-certified teachers nationwide.
