Calian Systems Engineering Division Wins Multi-Million Thuraya In-orbit/In-service Test System Contract.

KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 1999-- CALIAN(TSE:CTY.) CALIAN Technology Ltd. (TSE: CTY) is pleased to announce that its system engineering division, SED Systems Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary has been awarded a contract from Hughes Space and Communications (HSC) of El Segundo, California, the leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites.

Under the terms of a multi-million dollar contract, SED will design, manufacture and install a Satellite In-orbit and In-Service Test System for the Thuraya satellite program. The system will be installed in Sharjah, UAE in the first quarter of 2000.

The Thuraya program uses a new generation of high-performance geo-synchronous satellite to provide high-quality voice, data, fax, messaging and location services directly to dual-mode handheld telephones or vehicular terminals. Scheduled for launch in May 2000, Thuraya will serve customers in the Middle East, North and Central Africa, Europe, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

SED's IOT/SIT will be used initially to verify the performance of the Thuraya satellite soon after it is in orbit. The system will then be used throughout the fifteen-year expected lifetime of the satellite to continue to evaluate the performance of the payload system.
