It is involved in many industries, including electronics, communications and information technology. ) of Saint-Hubert, Quebec, announced today that Calian's Systems Engineering Division has been awarded a $9.2 million contract tendered through Public Works and Government Services Canada Public Works and Government Services Canada, also referred to as Department of Public Works and Government Services, is the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for the government's internal servicing and administration.  (PWGSC PWGSC Public Works and Government Services Canada ).

Under the terms of the contract, Calian's System Engineering Division (SED (1) (Stream EDitor) A Unix text editor that processes an entire file. It is the stream-oriented version of ed, an earlier text editor. Sed executes ed commands, but instead of editing one line at a time, sed applies the commands to the whole file. ) will provide operations and maintenance services for the Canadian Space Agency's Satellite Operations Directorate at its facility in Saint-Hubert, and Saskatoon Saskatoon (săskətn`), city (1991 pop. 186,058), S central Sask., Canada, on the South Saskatchewan River. , Saskatchewan. The contract runs until March 31, 2003 and includes provisions for an additional two years of service, potentially bringing the total value of the contract to $18.7 million.

"Over the past five years, since the launch of RADARSAT-1, Canada has rapidly captured more than 15% of the global remote sensing market. Driving innovation and excellence, the Canadian Space Agency is actively developing Canadian expertise, working in cooperation with our growing space industry to positively impact the Canadian economy," said the Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency. "Based on their ongoing collaboration with the CSA and other customers, Saskatoon-based Calian SED is building an impressive record in testing, operating and managing satellite systems."

Ray Basler, President of Calian's Systems Engineering Division said the new contract is a demonstration of the importance SED places on building and maintaining long-term relationships with its customers. "We are extremely pleased to continue this highly successful program with the CSA," said Mr. Basler, "SED is committed to providing our customers with the rapid delivery of our world-class systems and services that fully satisfy their needs in testing, operating and managing their satellite systems."

SED's involvement consists of supporting the operation, development, maintenance, management and ongoing evolution of satellite control and support systems provided by the CSA through the provision of a dedicated team of qualified personnel. SED's team in Saint-Hubert consists of 40 engineers and technicians, and six technicians in Saskatoon.

This contract is a continuation of work SED has performed for the CSA since 1993, and reflects the CSA's evolving requirements. RADARSAT-1, although designed to be operational for 5 years, still provides Canada and the world with useful information to both commercial and scientific users in the fields of agriculture, cartography cartography: see map.

In addition, the CSA is developing new satellite programs with similar mission characteristics, and intends to expand the existing operational knowledge, systems and infrastructure into a cost-effective multi-mission operational capability.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget, and is therefore built into the existing financial framework. About SED
