Cali-Ballet.For years, Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, has been a black hole for ballet companies. But that didn't intimidate former Royal Danish Ballet Royal Danish Ballet, one of the oldest major ballet companies, established at the opening of Denmark's Royal Theater in Copenhagen in 1748. The company was developed over the centuries by three great masters. artistic director Thordal Christensen and NYCB NYCB New York City Ballet NYCB New York Community Bank alum Colleen Neary. Their new Los Angeles Ballet debuted in December with an original production of The Nutcracker. "We're learning from the past, but not dwelling on it," says Christensen, who believes he can find an audience base by traveling to venues throughout the sprawling city, rather than asking them to drive through L.A.'s infamous traffic. This month they bring "An Evening of Balanchine" featuring Serenade serenade [Ital. sera=evening], term used to designate several types of musical composition. Opera and song literature yield numerous examples of the serenade sung or played by a lover at night beneath his beloved's window; outstanding is , Apollo, and "Rubies" from Jewels to three sites.
