Caleb Technology Corp.'s Ultra High Density Floppy Disk Drive to Include Adaptec's DMC Chipset.

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1997--Caleb Technology Corp. Monday announced that it plans to include the Adaptec drive manager controller chipset in its first removable flexible media product.

``We selected the Adaptec chipset because it provides us a solution for quick time to market, low cost, and superior features and performance,'' said Caleb Vice President of Engineering and Product Development Dr. Toan Doan.

``Adaptec offers us a complete solution with the drive manager chipset, as well as the floppy disk subsystem controller, which allows the Caleb product to be backward compatible Refers to hardware or software that is compatible with earlier versions of the product. Also called "downward compatible." Contrast with forward compatible.

with the large installed base of the current standard floppy drives.''

The race is on for the next ``A:'' drive, and Caleb is well positioned in this exciting new market. Utilizing the Adaptec chipset will insure Caleb's customers a solid roadmap to provide low-cost I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

The Adaptec drive manager controller chipset provides an integrated solution for the DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  microcontroller A single chip that contains the processor (the CPU), non-volatile memory for the program (ROM or flash), volatile memory for input and output (RAM), a clock and an I/O control unit. , the servo, along with Adaptec's ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) The specification for ATA (IDE) tape drives and CD-ROMs. See IDE.

interface controller and floppy disk subsystem. The IC architecture is designed around a high-performance, low-power DSP core with optimized drive control functions.

This combination of processing power provides a platform to process advanced digital control algorithms resulting in higher performance products. The various functional blocks within the device work together automatically to ensure proper data-flow management and data integrity.

``Caleb's strategy to provide backward compatibility See backward compatible.

with the current standard 1.44MB floppy drives, combined with the high capacity/performance and low price of the Caleb drive, will allow system OEMs the opportunity to offer versatile solutions to their customers,'' said Doan.

Caleb cartridges use the standard 3.5-inch shell with the latest advanced flexible media offered by several leading media vendors. The drive includes separate transducers for the Ultra High Density and the existing standard floppy to fulfill a major function of the PC as an A: drive.
