Calderon succeeds Dr. Willis Holcombe who retires at the end of January after 17 years of service to the college. Calderon comes to BCC from Ventura College in Ventura, California where he is serving in his ninth year as president. In that post, Calderon provided leadership and overall direction, supervision, coordination and evaluation of the college. Calderon also serves the three-college Ventura County Community College District as vice chancellor for economic development.

Some accomplishments include creating the Ventura College Institute for Community and Professional Development, developing partnerships with private and public entities in Ventura County, expanding the Ventura College East Campus, and overseeing an institutional strategic planning process.

Before joining Ventura College, Calderon served as vice president of instruction at Oxnard College in California for three years. At Oxnard, Calderon oversaw the college's instructional programs and services. He also served for six years as vice president of administrative services at Oxnard.

Calderon previously served as assistant dean of student services at Los Angeles City College Los Angeles City College, known as LACC, is a public community college in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles, California. A part of the Los Angeles Community College District, it is located on Vermont Avenue south of Santa Monica Boulevard.  for six years, and coordinator of student financial services at Ventura College for four years.
