Introduced in 2001 by the Free Standards Group, which later became the Linux Foundation, applications based on the LSB standard will run properly under ).

LPI will provide Linux certification through an extensive three-level program that will deliver the first certification exams third quarter this year. Linux professionals will be certified to have in-depth technical knowledge of the Linux operating system and kernel with broad-based knowledge of the Linux industry as a whole. They will then be able to go on and certify on product distributions of their choice. LPI certification will further increase Linux implementation by small-to-enterprise class businesses through internal training and will improve Linux visibility for Authorized Education Centers (AECs), VARs and resellers worldwide.

"It's important to have quality, standardized Linux certification," said Benoy Tamang, marketing vice president for Caldera Systems. "And we're pleased to be one of the founding LPI sponsors and part of the movement. LPI can provide a vendor-neutral forum and standards that will ensure Linux value to end users. With this kind of quality assurance Linux can grow in the scope and direction needed to support the overwhelming need for Linux training that we are all experiencing."

"Getting industry support for a vendor-neutral, community-driven program is critical to our vision of what Linux certification is all about," said LPI Executive Director, Evan Leibovitch. "Caldera's participation and encouragement of LPI was early and enthusiastic, and helped us gain the momentum we needed."

independent certification efforts within the Linux community," said Lonn Johnston, vice president of Pacific HiTech. "We see LPI as a major contributor in that process and plan to work closely with them in developing programs to broaden the acceptance of Linux in the corporate enterprise market."

"We see the strategic value in an independent certification program for Linux professionals that emerges from within the Linux community and is widely endorsed by key players throughout the industry," stated David Mandala mandala (mŭn`dələ), [Skt.,=circular, round] a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance in Hindu and Buddhist Tantrism. , Linuxcare vice president of education and certification. "We are proud to join with Caldera in supporting the LPI initiative and look forward to producing courseware preparing students for LPI certification."

"I feel it is important to separate not only the specific hardware and specific distribution from the certification, but to separate certification from training. Anyone who knows the information should be able to get a quality certification at the lowest possible cost. Knowing that this is an aim of LPI brings my endorsement," said Jon Hall, Linux International executive director.
