Calcium

Calcium and Weight Loss have such a profound relationship? Two out of three Americans are overweight? No doubt were eating more and exercising less. There is another cause, a lack of the mineral calcium in our diets. If your among the many Americans getting a low average level of calcium, 255 milligrams per day, you are 84% more likely to be overweight than if you are among those getting the highest level, 1,346 milligrams per day, according to data from the government's Health Reports.

Calcium levels fall, due to a diet low in calcium, for example, the body releases more of the hormone calcitriol. Calcitriol increases absorption of calcium in the intestines, so you get the most calcium possible from food. Furthermore, it increases re-absorption through the kidneys, so you lose as little calcium through excretion. Calcitriol also controls how fat cells work. When you get too little calcium and more calcitriol is released, your fat cells make and store more fat, causing you to pack on weight!

Why is calcium important in weight loss?

Calcium is a fat burner. High-calcium diets seem to favor burning rather than storing fat. Researchers say this is because calcium stored in fat cells plays an important role in fat storage and breakdown.

Calcium changes the efficiency of weight loss. In fact, study after study has shown that the people with the highest calcium intake overall weighed the least, and the people with the lowest calcium intake had the highest percentage of body fat.

Abundant calcium is a signal to the fat tissue that your body is well-nourished, and no longer needs to store fat, but can burn it. Fat storage is reversed, fat burning increased.

Another way calcium helps in weight loss is to help reduce cravings. The combination of high calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin C has been proven to quickly reduce all kinds of cravings. People with the highest intake of calcium lost the most fat on weight control programs regardless of exercise level. Significant weight loss was even observed in overweight people who were not watching their diet, when they increased their calcium intake!

The best Calcium weight loss supplement contains magnesium, vitamin D and some other nutrients as well in addition to a calcium salt. These nutrients are not only important for proper absorption of calcium, but also provide health benefits of their own, such as development of a strong immune system and prevention of many serious complications that occur as a result of nutrient deficiency in our body.

What Does Science Have to Say About Calcium and Weight Loss?

Numerous clinical trials and studies have been conducted to explore the relationship between calcium intake and obesity. Here are some of their results:

1. A study conducted by the US National Institutes of Health found that overweight people who consumed plenty of calcium not only lost a significant amount of weight, but that the body fat they lost was in the problematic mid-body area.

2. Results of a weight loss program conducted in Canada, with the results published in The British Journal of Nutrition, showed that obese women whose diets were deficient in calcium lost nearly six kilos (12.2 pounds) during the program. In addition to following a low calorie diet, the women took 1200 grams of calcium supplements daily.

3. An article in The Journal of Nutrition discusses implications of clinical trials that calcium may contribute to prevent obesity and the occurrence of insulin resistance syndrome.
