In the wake of the national tragedy, the boys were able to raise over $4,000, thanks to the generosity of their small neighborhood community.

of the despair that settled over all Americans in the days following last Tuesday's tragedy, Peggy Patrick, whose son Kevin is a member of Cub Scout Pack 127, passed along an idea to Den 1 leaders, Dana Wortham and Marty Gonzales.

"She suggested all of the mothers donate baked goods that the boys could sell to raise money for the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross. ," said Wortham. "She even offered to hold it at her house, and supported us all day with drinks and sandwiches."

What happened next could not have been predicted. "These are eight- and nine-year old boys, who didn't even fully grasp the magnitude of what had happened," said Peggy Patrick. "But they worked very hard, four hours Saturday and four hours Sunday, standing outside waving flags, shaking hands, and raising money.

"The neighborhood rallied together, giving whatever they could, anywhere from $1 to $1,000, in one case. After giving, some neighbors even went home to make additional baked goods to donate for sale. The results made the boys very proud of themselves."

The six boys, who will not even be holding their first pack meeting until this Wednesday evening, raised more than $4,000 that will be given to the American Red Cross to aid relief efforts in New York New York, state, United States

"We held this bake sale to help all of the people of New York City and Washington, D.C., to get medical help," said nine-year old Kevin Patrick. "We made $4,000 to contribute, but if all the people in all of the U.S. communities did this, it would add up to millions of dollars and help a lot."
