Business Editors

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 2001

The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) today announced the appointment of two division Chiefs -- Tim Garza of its new Enterprise Modeling and Management Division and Rick Nelson of Operations and Support Services.

Garza comes to his new post from the Management Information Systems Office (MISO), which he has headed since its formation in 1996.

CalPERS' Enterprise Modeling and Management Division will handle business engineering, project management, information security, and enterprise architecture governance services previously provided by MISO and other CalPERS entities.

Garza will report directly to Deputy Executive Officer James H. Gomez, who announced the appointment. "With his unique blend of business and technology engineering experience in both the public and private sector, along with his project management background, I am confident that Tim will add value to all of our endeavors," Gomez said.

As MISO Chief, Garza recently directed the transfer of members' paper files to digital images. He also spearheaded the CalPERS' Year 2000 personal computer project, a cost-saving consolidation of 168 business applications to 63.

He came to CalPERS from the private sector a decade ago.

Rick Nelson joined the Operations Support Services Division (OSSD) on November 1. This division is responsible for contract administration, purchasing, administering Board elections, mail processing, member records management, and other staff and management support services.

A state employee for 31 years, Nelson has managed the Business Infrastructure Services Unit of the Information Technology and Services Division since February 2000. The unit provides computer operations, production support, and enterprise network services.

Nelson previously worked 21 years for the state Department of Education, overseeing telecommunications, disaster recovery, and information systems.

CalPERS is the nation's largest public pension fund, with assets totaling more than $143 billion. The System provides retirement and health benefits to more than 1.2 million State and local public employees and their families.
