CalPERS Names Sherry Johnstone Chief Compliance Officer.


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) has appointed Sherry Johnstone as the pension fund's Chief Compliance Officer.

Johnstone will lead an independent and objective enterprise-wide compliance effort to ensure that CalPERS operations comply with the System's internal policies and with external rules such as the Internal Revenue Code The Internal Revenue Code is the body of law that codifies all federal tax laws, including income, estate, gift, excise, alcohol, tobacco, and employment taxes. These laws constitute title 26 of the U.S. Code (26 U.S.C.A. § 1 et seq. , the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website, Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when

She will report to CalPERS General Counsel Peter Mixon, Chief Executive Officer Fred Buenrostro and to the Board of Administration through its Finance Committee. She will also serve as the primary consultant to the Finance Committee and Executive Management team in formulating policies and procedures Policies and Procedures are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfill the policies. They are often initiated because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental  related to internal compliance issues involving all CalPERS-administered programs.
