CalPERS Names Leon Shahinian Senior Investment Officer for Alternative Investment Management Program.


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Mark Anson, Chief Investment Officer of the California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), announced today the appointment of Leon Shahinian as Senior Investment Officer for the pension fund's Alternative Investment Management (AIM) program. He replaces Rick Hayes who left to become a managing partner of Oak Hill Capital Management.

Shahinian will be responsible for managing a globally diversified diversified (di·verˑ·s  portfolio of private equity investments representing approximately $20 billion of committed capital.

He will also oversee CalPERS private equity investment team and external advisors to ensure that the Fund's investment strategies, policies and new initiatives are executed effectively. He will report to CalPERS Chief Investment Officer Mark Anson.

Shahinian joined CalPERS in August 1998. He previously co-managed a $1.5 billion fixed income portfolio for Sacramento-based Foundation Health Systems, and served as a Senior Credit Analyst for Sacramento Commercial Bank where he focused on small to mid-size company financings.
