Indie rocker Rachael Cantu, who has recorded with alternative darlings Mates of State Mates of State are an American indie rock duo, active since 1997. The group is composed of Kori Gardner (vocals, Electone and Hammond B-3 electric organs, Casio synthesizer, and Rhodes electric piano, piano, and occasional guitar) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drum set, glockenspiel, , offers songs that echo that first encounter between heart-struck strangers who spend the whole night chatting together in a corner, trading intimate secrets until dawn. The music remains quietly moody with a touch of giddiness--call it upbeat foreboding. On "Hear My Laughter," Cantu's voice bends and melts around the notes as the guitar and keyboards evoke an approaching thunderstorm thunderstorm, violent, local atmospheric disturbance accompanied by lightning, thunder, and heavy rain, often by strong gusts of wind, and sometimes by hail. . "My First War" keeps the energy bubbling just below the surface, always in check. ). While "I Know You Will" nearly sinks under its own weight, as if Cantu is nearly out of energy, "Run All Night" ends the set nicely on a spacious, spooky, jazzy jazz·y
