Cafe to open in East Village. (Retail New York).Grubb & Ellis Company announced that it has represented DT*UT Cafe Lounge in leasing 2,200 SF of retail space at 41 Avenue B in the East Village. Following the success of the original DT*UT on the Upper East Side, owner Robert Sternbach considered opening a second location downtown, but had difficulty finding the appropriate space. "We evaluated several opportunities in the market," recalls Vinett, "but when we saw 41 Avenue B, we knew we had found the right space." The new East Village location and its Upper East Side twin will now personify per·son·i·fy tr.v. per·son·i·fied, per·son·i·fy·ing, per·son·i·fies 1. The new cafe/lounge will occupy the ground floor storefront space in one of several new apartment buildings that have emerged in the area over the past few years. Sternbach intends to replicate the open design and casual atmosphere of the uptown location, but the Avenue B concept boasts a 1,700-SF outdoor garden, seating area. "This space provided the atmosphere, cost efficiency, and customer base best suited for a new DT*UT location" remarked Sternbach, "but the outdoor courtyard sealed the deal." Alphabet City has been experiencing gentrification gentrification, the rehabilitation and settlement of decaying urban areas by middle- and high-income people. Beginning in the 1970s and 80s, higher-income professionals, drawn by low-cost housing and easier access to downtown business areas, renovated deteriorating over the past five years as young artists and students have flocked to the eclectic area. DT*UT is the most recent of numerous trendy restaurants, boutiques and bars to migrate to this burgeoning thirty-something neighborhood. Sternbach plans to open the new DT*UT in late spring. |
