Smalltalk SUnit-Based Validation Framework Promotes Faster Analysis, Increased Accuracy

Caniglia, director of development for Caesar Systems, presented the paper at the 15th International Smalltalk Joint Conference 2007 in Lugano, Switzerland Aug. 25-31. At this conference hosted by the European Smalltalk Users Group (www.esug.org), Caniglia discussed similarities and differences between conventional validation methodologies and the novel SUnit-based validation framework used in Caesar Systems' Smalltalk-based PetroVR application, a suite of decision support tools for the upstream petroleum industry. Caniglia showed how the SUnit-validation framework can be used for incorporating heavy validations ubiquitously into the application, combined with the desire to provide an approach that is end-user focused, functional in a runtime environment, based on an increasing library of real-world validators and capable of providing comprehensive validation in seconds instead of minutes or hours.

"Extreme Validation is an important concept that should be widely implemented in business software applications because it provides base classes for the integration of business rules within a unique framework. It offers a simple yet meaningful framework for accuracy tests that reduce miscalculation, identify mistakes and ensure high quality software," said Dr. Stephane Ducasse, ESUG president.

According to Caniglia, the PetroVR application recognizes the work of noted Smalltalk expert Andres Valloud, while providing a number of clear advantages to geoscientists, engineers, economists and project managers involved in petroleum exploration and production activities as a result of these developmental considerations.

"Traditional validation approaches have relied upon a static approach to testing information and assertions, comparing input data to a relatively limited set of pre-established rules. This results in a restricted testing environment, imprecise feedback to system users and a model that often is either too limiting or too forgiving," said Caniglia, who is director of development for Caesar Systems. "Through the use of the object-oriented technology inherent to the Smalltalk platform, the Caesar Systems PetroVR suite is able to identify and appropriately manage changes in the larger evaluation model, versus simply weighting input data provided by users. As a result, we're able to speed analysis of prospective petroleum exploration and production activities, while increasing user confidence in outcomes projected by the system. These are all critical in a world highly dependent on development of new sources of energy."
