Caere Announces Shipment of the 10 Millionth Copy of Its Industry-Leading OmniPage OCR Software; Market Growth and Technology Improvements Combine to Drive Mainstream Adoption of OCR.

LOS GATOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 1998--Caere Corp. (NASDAQ:CAER), the worldwide leader in scanner software, today announced that it has shipped its 10-millionth copy of its OmniPage brand optical character recognition (OCR) software.

This number includes units of Caere's flagship product, OmniPage Pro, as well as units of OmniPage Lite and OmniPage Limited Edition distributed through Caere's bundling arrangements with top scanner manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard, UMAX, Microtek, and others.

A convergence of market trends and technological improvements is behind the growing popularity of OCR. Some of these factors include: -0-

--   Higher scanner penetration. Scanner sales have tripled during the
     past 18 months, due mainly to dropping scanner prices. According
     to PC Data of Reston, Va., more than 60% of scanners sold in
     recent months cost under $150.

--   Increased OCR accuracy. Recognition accuracy has dramatically
     improved on all types of documents, particularly degraded
     documents, making OCR an even more appealing alternative to
     re-typing. The latest version of OmniPage Pro reduces errors by
     62% over the previous version, and Caere guarantees better than
     99% accuracy on laser-printed originals using standard typefaces.

--   Greater customer awareness. Most scanners include "lite" or
     limited edition OCR software that exposes users to the time- and
     money-saving benefits of OCR and allows them to evaluate its
     usefulness with no additional expense.

--   Speed improvements. OCR is not only more accurate, it is also
     faster. Caere has improved the speed of the OCR engine, and PCs
     have also increased in processing power. This is important as OCR
     is a processor-intensive application.

--   Increased ease of use. Intuitive interfaces and learning tools
     like Wizards make OCR products much easier to learn and use.
     OmniPage Pro has received awards for its ease of use, as well as
     for other qualities such as accuracy and speed.
