:CDN (Content Delivery Network) A system of distributed content on a large intranet or the public Internet in which copies of content are replicated and cached throughout the network. ), the world's leading supplier of software and services for electronics design, today announced a range of new services targeting digital television (DTV (Digital TeleVision) Transmitting TV using digital signals. The major DTV standards are ATSC (North America), DVB (Europe) and ISDB (Japan). All three use MPEG-2 video compression and Dolby Digital audio compression. DVB and ISDB also include MPEG audio compression. ) applications.

This addition to the Cadence(R) multimedia design services portfolio brings state-of-the-art methodologies and technology, application-specific expertise, and access to intellectual property (IP) to companies needing to minimize design risk and expedite time to market for their DTV chips and systems.

The Cadence Symbionics Group offers design services in DTV for all world-wide standards at all levels of design, from behavioral modeling to complete turnkey consumer products. Cadence is successfully employing these capabilities by developing digital set-top boxes, integrated digital TV sets, Java-based TV, proprietary middleware, terrestrial, cable, and satellite demodulators, complete DTV chipsets, and integration platforms for system-on-a-chip (SOC) implementation. Recently, the company has made substantial technology investments for support of Java-based systems, including a wide-ranging strategic development agreement with Sun Microsystems.

Consumer demand for sophisticated television products with higher degrees of quality and features has resulted in the birth of the DTV market. One of the major trends occurring in the DTV market is the rapid transition to higher levels of integration. This trend is fueled by the need to be cost competitive. Companies that only offer partial solutions are at a disadvantage because they cannot compete with lower cost, and more integrated solutions.

Brent Hudson, vice president and general manager of the Cadence Symbionics Group, indicates that Cadence has made substantial technology investments to combat the toughest of these design challenges. This includes the development of system and chip-level architectures, software and hardware reference designs, IP modules, and verification suites. Cadence is also an active participant in the committees for all the major worldwide standards such as DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) An international digital television (DTV) standard that is the European and Far Eastern counterpart of the North American ATSC standard. , and ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) An international digital television (DTV) standard adopted by the U.S., Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and Argentina. .
