CacheFlow Internet Caching Appliances Help KBkids.com Accommodate Holiday Shopping Traffic.

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2000

Web Site Identified by The Wall Street Journal

as the Fastest Online Toy-Shopping Experience

CacheFlow(R) Inc. (Nasdaq:CFLO CFLO Central Florida Lyric Opera ), a leading provider of Internet caching appliances A self-contained cache server dedicated to Web caching. See Web cache and NetCache.

NetCache Appliance
A NetCache is an "appliance" because it plugs into the network and performs one function: Web caching.
, today announced that KBkids.com implemented CacheFlow's Internet caching appliances to boost the performance of its popular e-commerce Web site and accommodate the boom in customers during the holiday season.

The Wall Street Journal said www.kbkids.com had the fastest online toy-shopping experience and was &uot;best overall&uot; among toy-retailer Web sites.

KBkids.com made a number of improvements to its technology infrastructure, including deploying the CacheFlow solution, in anticipation of the holiday shopping rush. On November 29, The Wall Street Journal ordered identical holiday toys from five major sites and graded them in six areas: total time spent online, product availability, shipping options, cost, delivery time and return policies.

Writing in the December 3 edition of The Wall Street Journal, Lauren Lipton ranked KBkids.com as &uot;the big winner&uot; among online toy stores A toy store, or toy shop, is a retail business specializing in the services of selling toys. No longer held to the limitations of the brick and mortar outlet, the toy store has successfully created a presence within the e-commerce industry. . It was also singled out for providing the fastest online ordering experience, having all requested items in stock and offering the best overall shipping service.

&uot;This is a case of implementing the right solution at the right time,&uot; said Srikant Srinivasan, founder and chief executive officer of KBkids.com. &uot;Since we upgraded our technology infrastructure, including implementing the CacheFlow appliances, response time for content has been reduced substantially.

&uot;We experienced tremendous traffic to www.kbkids.com during the holidays, but the Web site handled the influx beautifully and helped our customers enjoy a highly convenient and satisfying online toy-shopping experience. The CacheFlow appliance is a valuable piece of our technology infrastructure.&uot;

By upgrading its technology infrastructure, KBkids.com cut the time required to deliver full pages to customers and lightened the traffic load on its servers and firewall. One of the elements in this upgrade was deploying CacheFlow appliances in front of its e-commerce site and outside the firewall.

CacheFlow appliances locally store and serve Internet content that is most requested by users while simultaneously monitoring the source of that content for changes. KBkids.com found implementing an effective caching solution to be a more cost-effective and efficient strategy than installing additional Web servers.

Not only does one CacheFlow appliance deliver an equivalent performance gain of multiple Web servers, but the CacheFlow solution also enhances the scalability of KBkids.com's infrastructure because the appliances require significantly less labor to install, maintain and manage than do Web servers.

Separate tests conducted by two independent performance- measurement firms, Keynote and Service Metrics, Inc., documented dramatic response time improvement for www.kbkids.com. The studies also showed throughput from KBkids.com to its customers more than doubled after implementing an effective caching solution that included CacheFlow appliances.

&uot;CacheFlow was the first to roll out caching solutions purpose-built for e-commerce applications. These appliances are proving themselves every single day in some of the world's most demanding environments. Certainly, the holiday season at a leading online toy store qualifies as such,&uot; said Brian NeSmith Brian NeSmith is a technology entrepreneur and CEO of Blue Coat Systems, Inc.

NeSmith graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984, holding a Bachelors Degree in electrical engineering.
, chief executive officer of CacheFlow.

&uot;With the recent outages at other e-commerce sites, we're happy to be part of the solution that is helping KBkids.com continue to give their customers an outstanding Web-shopping experience.&uot;
