Internet Photonics Inc. today announced that Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE NYSE

Cablevision has completed deployment in Eastern Long Island, in New Jersey, and in the New York-Connecticut region.

Solutions from Internet Photonics are enabling Cablevision to capitalize on the benefits of Optical Ethernet for the faster delivery of Video On Demand (VOD) services to cable customers over their existing digital cable infrastructure, while realizing cost efficiencies in both capital investment and ongoing operating expenses Operating expenses

"Internet Photonics was able to seamlessly integrate its transport platform into Cablevision's broadband network," said Robert Clyne, Vice President of Engineering and Technologies for Cablevision. "We see VOD as a key component of our digital cable service, which is growing exponentially. Internet Photonics' solution helped us deploy VOD faster, without additional network infrastructure build-out, and reduced the cost of delivering video streams to our customers."

Most major MSOs have targeted 2003 as the year to budget for the introduction of VOD and other revenue enhancing services. Internet Photonics' Optical Ethernet and WDM solutions allow Cable Multiple Systems Operators (MSOs) for the first time to offer VOD, Internet Access, Interactive TV, and Cable Telephony combined with standard CATV (Community Antenna TV) The original name for cable TV. It used a single antenna at the highest location in the community in order to deliver a quality signal to homes in areas with hilly terrain or other interference.  broadcast service over the same digital infrastructure.

"With the LightStack MX, Internet Photonics has driven the cost for an end-to-end GbE connection to a fraction of competing alternatives, enabling Cablevision to cost-effectively deploy centralized VOD servers for greater profitability and faster return on investment," said Gregory Koss, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "Our solutions enable one integrated, highly-reliable 10 gigabit DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

To deploy its leading edge VOD network, Cablevision is using the Internet Photonics LightStack(TM) MX and LightHandler(TM) PC. It is cost-effectively deploying them on a scale-as-demand-grows basis, with the ability to introduce future premium services with minimal infrastructure investment risk.

The LightStack MX is a 10 Gigabit Optical Ethernet transport platform that uses Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM) to greatly increase the transport capacity and service delivery flexibility of existing cable infrastructure. It integrates transport and optical networking functionality to provide Cablevision with the ability to seamlessly connect revenue-generating services to a high speed optical transport network by multiplexing up to eight GbE services onto a 10 Gigabit wavelength.

The LightHandler PC is a scaleable, all-optical passive carrier-grade DWDM wavelength management platform that has been flexibly engineered to unleash stranded capacity in Cablevision's existing network. It can be added to an existing SONET or SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) The European counterpart to SONET. See SONET.

fiber link and opens up an additional 320 Gbps of capacity, which the LightStack MX can leverage - without disrupting the existing traffic. This allows new services to be added into the existing CATV infrastructure without building a separate network.
