Cabletron unveils full suite of high-speed LAN switches; second wave of switching products delivered under recently announced synthesis framework.

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1995--Within weeks of defining its Synthesis framework for migrating customers to switched-based virtual networks, Cabletron Systems (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:CS) is delivering on its commitment to offer a full suite of high-speed LAN switches.

The company officially unveiled today seven new switches deployable across Cabletron's MMAC MMAC Multimedia Mobile Access Communication
MMAC Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce
MMAC Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center
MMAC Mutated in Multiple Advanced Cancers
MMAC Multi Media Access Center (Cabletron)
and MMAC-Plus family of switching hubs.

In a related announcement, Cabletron also unveiled the ESX-1320,

a 12 port standalone Ethernet switch A device that connects clients and servers to each other in an Ethernet network. See switched Ethernet.  designed for high-performance workgroups in a stackable environment. The workgroup switch A network switch designed for LAN traffic within an enterprise. Contrast with carrier-class switch.  can be used to connect high-bandwidth users or as a central switch for use with Cabletron's HubSTACK line of products or third-party stackable devices.

"These combined announcements are the second in a series of product introductions that will position Cabletron as the only internetworking vendor to provide complete virtual networking capabilities by year end," said Craig Benson, Cabletron's chairman and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
. "The switches allow a network to transition from traditional connectionless hub/router infrastructures to virtual connection-oriented switch systems."

Cabletron's comprehensive switching strategy delivers a complete switching system engineered to reduce costs by offering scalable performance, proactive and real-time management with the ability for "plug-and-play" operational simplicity throughout the network.

"The LAN switching market is expected to break the $1 billion revenue mark by the year 2000. Cabletron's strategy and products position the company to be a major player in the LAN switching market over the next few years," said Karl Shimada, vice president, Rising Star Research. "Companies offering complete network solutions using LAN switches that interoperable and highly manageable across the entire enterprise will grab the lion's share of this fast-growing area of the industry."

To address data center applications, Cabletron has unveiled three new modules for the company's MMAC-Plus enterprise switch, a 12 port Ethernet switch (9E312-12) and two dual-port FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  switches (9F310-02/9F315-02). The modules provide high speed, dedicated bandwidth for building multi-gigabit-per-second backbones utilizing existing desktop and server interfaces through hardware-based switching.

The new Ethernet and FDDI switch modules are integrated onto the MMAC-Plus Internal Network Bus (INB)-a two gigabit-per-second, 64-bit wide, time-division multiplexed backplane similar to that deployed in many of today's ATM switches. A fully configured MMAC-Plus chassis supports over one million packets-per-second (pps) of throughput utilizing these modules.

Cabletron's current INB switches, based on the company's FastPacket Switch ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor. , immediately deliver over 150,000 pps throughput, with a 12-month target exceeding 400,000 packets-per-second and quadrupled port density. All Cabletron LAN switches offer Full Duplex and RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities.  services and run traditional switching with support for future virtual networking capabilities.

To address wiring closet applications, Cabletron has unveiled three additional modules for the company's MMAC-Plus Enterprise Switch Platform; 12 and 36 port fiber optic Ethernet MicroLAN switches (9E138-12/9E138-36) and a six port Ethernet switch (9E106-06) featuring modular Ethernet Port Interface Modules (EPIMs) for connectivity in 10BASE-T twisted pair, 10BASE-FL fiber optic, or 10BASE-2 and 10BASE-5 coaxial environments.

The two Ethernet MicroLAN switches bring fiber directly to the desktop for security sensitive applications or use in next-generation structured wiring systems. The modular 9E106-06, targeted at the MMAC-Plus installed base, integrates with existing MicroLAN modules to deliver dedicated bandwidth to high-end users, servers, or existing stackable hubs.

The new Ethernet switch modules are integrated onto the MMAC-Plus Flexible Network Bus (FNB FNB First National Bank
FNB Food Not Bombs
FNB Food and Nutrition Board (Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences)
FNB Food and Beverage (industry)
FNB Front Nouveau de Belgique
)-a 400 Mbps interconnect using standards-based FDDI transfer technologies. A fully configured MMAC-Plus chassis supports over 700,000 pps throughput utilizing these modules.

MMAC switching explained

To provide collapsed backbone implementations for Cabletron's installed base of over 80,000 MMAC chassis, the company has unveiled the ESXMIM-F2. The product features six ports of switched Ethernet via five 10BASE-FL multimode fiber interfaces and one flexible Ethernet Port Interface Module (EPIM (Ethernet Port Interface Module) A plug-in module for a particular type of Ethernet port. Used in network devices such as hubs and switches, it enables different types of Ethernets (10Base-T, 10Base2, etc.) to be attached. ). The ESXMIM-F2 supports a modular high-speed uplink through Cabletron's Bridge Router Interface technology, with immediate support for uplinks to ATM and FDDI.

The new switches provide a migration path to virtual networking through Cabletron's SecureFast Switching, a connection-oriented, standards-based switching implementation that provides high-speed switching capabilities for cell and packet-based LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  users. SFS (1) (Self-certifying File System) A global, network file system sponsored by DARPA that runs under Unix. Providing strong security in an untrusted environment, it enables any client to access any server that supports it.  focuses on delivering a simplified network operation model, allowing streamlined administration and lower cost of network ownership.

SFS also allows Cabletron's new switches to work in conjunction with existing bridges and routers to protect customer investment in existing equipment during the transition to virtual networking.

All of Cabletron's products can be fully managed through the company's SPECTRUM for Open Systems, which includes support for HP OpenView, NetView for AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , SunNet Manager, Novell NMS See NetWare Management System.  and SPECTRUM 3.0, Cabletron's premier enterprise management platform.
