Cabletron unveils Token Ring Switch with FDDI uplink; Strategic partnership with Nashoba Networks begins integration of Token Ring Switching throughout Cabletron's complete line of intelligent switching hubs.ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1995--Cabletron Systems (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : CS) today unveiled its first Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps. Switch with an FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. uplink, continuing the support of its Synthesis framework and BlueVision/SNA strategy for migrating Token Ring and SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Under Cabletron's previously announced OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and partnership with Nashoba Networks, Cabletron will OEM Nashoba's Concord Token Ring Switch, a 8/16 port stackable or stand-alone device for both backbone and workgroup switch applications. This switch, Cabletron's TSX-1620, will now be available with an FDDI Uplink Option, the TSX-1620-F4. The FDDI Uplink Option offers enhanced network management through SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. and RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities. and includes an additional 4 switched Token Ring ports. A fully configured TSX-1620 with the FDDI Uplink Option will provide a total of 12 switched Token Ring ports. Both switches are fully manageable under Cabletron's SPECTRUM, SPECTRUM Portable Management Applications and Remote LANVIEW for Windows. "Our Token Ring switching solution with FDDI uplink was developed specifically for the large installed base of FDDI nodes in Fortune 500 organizations," said S. Robert Levine, president and chief executive officer of Cabletron. "Cabletron's leadership in high-end intelligent hubs, in combination with our strategic agreement with Nashoba, will allow us to offer Token Ring customers the enhanced network performance, simplified management and reduced cost of ownership that companies have come to expect from Cabletron network solutions." The markets for Token Ring switches and FDDI connectivity products are two of the fastest-growing segments in the computer internetworking arena. Token Ring switch sales are projected at $54 million in 1995, according to the Yankee Group, a Boston-based market research firm. By 1998, Yankee Group expects this market to explode by almost 800 percent to $481 million. In addition, there are 750,000 installed FDDI nodes, according to Tam Dell'Oro, president of the Dell'Oro Group. This large, existing installed base makes FDDI the overwhelming network topology implemented in high speed backbone networks, far surpassing any other high speed technology. In response to this growing demand in the marketplace, Cabletron is also developing a series of multiport Token Ring switches for the company's Multi Media Access Center (MMAC MMAC Multimedia Mobile Access Communication MMAC Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce MMAC Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center MMAC Mutated in Multiple Advanced Cancers MMAC Multi Media Access Center (Cabletron) ) and MMAC-Plus chassis to address high-end, data center switching applications. Specific configurations and products will be produced based on customer demand and recommendations. "There are more FDDI nodes installed on high speed backbone networks than any other type of topology," said Tom Burkardt, director of IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) connectivity products at Cabletron. "Our Token Ring switch with FDDI Uplink has been designed as a solution for alleviating network congestion while improving bandwidth usage. Additionally, with an insalled base of over 700,000 nodes, an obvious need exists in the high speed networking market for FDDI connectivity solutions," Burkardt concludes. The TSX-1620 and TSX-1620-F4 FDDI Uplink Option will be private-labeled, marketed and directly supported by Cabletron. The TSX-1620 is available in 60 days with a per-port cost of $1,625 (U.S. dollars). The TSX-1620-F4 FDDI Uplink Option will be available in Q1 '96. Pricing will be announced at that time.
