Targets carrier market with industry's most advanced ATM switch;

New offerings provide enterprise-wide ATM connectivity

Cabletron Systems (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:CS), today significantly raised the bar for ATM solutions with a set of products which set new standards for value, performance, scalability and ease-of-use. These new products are the result of an extensive ATM development program targeted at providing end-to-end ATM solutions for desktop-to-data center connectivity. The new offerings include cost-effective ATM switch solutions for workgroup and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  backbone connectivity, as well as the MMAC-Plus SmartCell Switch -- a high-performance, carrier-class ATM switch providing up to 75.6 gigabits-per-second of capacity.

"ATM represents one the most significant market opportunities in the networking industry over the next five years," said Ron Jeffries Ron Jeffries is one of the founders of the extreme programming (or 'XP') software development methodology. He was from 1996 an XP coach on the Chrysler Comprehensive Compensation System project, which was where XP was invented. , principle, Jeffries Research. "Cabletron's ATM line is clearly focused on the needs of the enterprise and public network markets, which will drive the ATM market to top $3 billion by 1999."

New additions to Cabletron's ATM product line announced today include:

-- The MMAC-Plus SmartCell Switch: A high-capacity switch for large enterprise and carrier markets, scaleable from 5.4 to 75.6 Gbps.

-- The SmartCell ZX-250 ATM Switches: A family of 2.5 Gbps. switches which set a new standard in ATM price/performance.

-- SecureFast SmartLANE Services: A package of integrated, non-proprietary ATM capabilities for Cabletron's SecureFast Virtual Networking Services.

"Cabletron has committed extensive resources to ensuring we provide customers with the best available solutions for enterprise and public network ATM requirements," said Chris Oliver, Cabletron's director of engineering and manufacturing. "We deliver highly scaleable solutions designed to meet the infrastructure needs of our large-enterprise and public network customers, and cost-effective, high-performance products for deploying ATM at the workgroup and LAN backbone levels."

High-End ATM Switching for the Public Network and Enterprise

To address high-end ATM requirements within the large enterprise-backbone and carrier markets, Cabletron has introduced the MMAC-Plus SmartCell Switch -- the industry's most advanced switch for large enterprise and carrier markets. Its revolutionary distributed architecture and modular switching fabric provide switching capacity from 5.4 to 75.6 Gbps., bringing new levels of scalability, manageability, fault-tolerance and ease-of-use to high-end ATM.

Leveraging Cabletron's MMAC-Plus switching architecture, the switch resides on the chassis' Cell Transfer Matrix (CTM CTM Continuum (gaming)

to support up to fourteen 5.4 Gbps ATM Switch modules. A fully configured MMAC-Plus provides up to 224 ports of ATM connectivity per chassis, with full flexibility of media, connector types and data rates including 45, 155, and 622 Mbps.

Processing and management capabilities also reside on each module for a fully-distributed, extremely fault-tolerant solution. The MMAC-Plus SmartCell Switch also comes with a robust set of intuitive tools for easy configuration, and all fourteen modules are manageable as one switch with a single IP address.

Cost-effective Workgroup and LAN Backbone ATM Connectivity

Cabletron's new SmartCell ZX-250 ATM switch family is a full line of advanced ASIC-Based 2.5 Gbps ATM switches which deliver high-performance, robust features at an extremely competitive price. The line includes the ZX-250 for Workgroup ATM applications, ZX-250i for Inter-Workgroup connectivity and the ZX-250r for high-availability ATM-based LAN backbones. All of the switches offer modular connections for media and data-rate flexibility with capacity for up to fifteen 155 Mbps ports.

The SmartCell ZX-250 family offers an extensive set of features not commonly available on switches in its price range, including plug-and-play and traffic management features for rapid deployment. The switch also supports important performance features such as shared memory (1) Using part of main memory to support a low-cost display circuit that does not have its own memory. See shared video memory.

All of the ZX-250s are fully standards-compliant, including SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  manageability and built-in support for LANE and IP-ATM clients and servers.

SecureFast SmartLANE -- Advanced Virtual Networking Capabilities

SmartLANE Services deliver a unique set of ATM services -- including MPOA-style cut-through routing between Emulated Local Area Networks (ELANs) -- which are fully integrated with Cabletron's SecureFast Virtual Networking Services. SecureFast SmartLANE Services allow virtual networks to be set up within an ATM environment and eliminate router router

The new, non-proprietary software is highly standards-compliant and works with any LANE compliant equipment, providing multiple ELANs. SmartLANE fully supports ATM Forum A membership organization founded in 1991 to promote ATM networking technology. It worked with ANSI and the ITU to set standards. Its first specification in 1992 defined the User-Network Interface (UNI). In 2004, the Forum merged with the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance.  LANE servers, and offers advanced broadcast limiting and resolution with Intelligent BUS and Intelligent LES services.
