ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 1996--Two of the computer industry's most innovative leaders in network and systems management -- Cabletron Systems' (NYSE:CS) and Seagate -- have developed integration software to provide customers with unparalleled efficiencies in resolving computer and networking problems.

Cabletron's SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager Version 4.0, the richest platform available for distributed, automated management, can now incorporate the Seagate NerveCenter Pro application for customizable and intelligent alarm correlation. Seagate NerveCenter Pro can be purchased directly from Seagate EMS and Cabletron will provide SPECTRUM customers with integration software. The combined products offer customers a powerful tool for managing network and system behavior, and quickly diagnosing problems, both within a single server domain and across multiple domains.

According to a recent Gartner survey, as much as eighty-five percent of the cost of running a network is directly related to administrative support and management, and as much a ninety percent of management costs are consumed in diagnosing problems and alarms.

SPECTRUM 4.0 provides customers with an out-of-the-box set of features for correlating alarms and diagnosing failures. These include the Inductive Modeling Technology at the heart of SPECTRUM, which offers a relationship-oriented model of networks and computer devices so that problems are immediately seen in context. Another feature, the SPECTRUM Alarm Notification Manager, allows customers to set rules, or policies, for sending alarms across the network to management applications. These rules, or policies, can in turn be administered by SPECTRUM's Scheduler to change on an hourly, daily or weekly basis according to business needs.

Seagate NerveCenter Pro provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface which enables administrators to quickly design state diagrams that correlate events and automate corrective actions. As an example, a state diagram can be created to alert a network manager when server utilization and LAN traffic are consistently high over a given period of time. The event can be assigned a higher priority than a standard alert and, when the condition occurs, Seagate NerveCenter Pro can automatically send a paging message to the network manager. The result is a substantial saving in management time and effort, while potential problems are identified and dealt with before they have serious consequences.
