Cabletron Unveils Token Ring Switching Strategy.ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 1995--Cabletron Systems (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : CS) today unveiled its strategy for integrating token ring switching throughout its complete line of intelligent switching hubs. In support of its Synthesis framework, the plan provides a strategic solution for migrating Token Ring users from traditional networking infrastructures to switched-based virtual internetworks. In a related announcement, Cabletron also unveiled its OpenSNA strategy for merging existing SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6. networks with switched virtual network infrastructures. The OpenSNA strategy merges both new and existing products under Cabletron's Synthesis framework to provide cost-effective solutions for remote, regional and corporate applications. Through internally developed technology, as well as a strategic technology partnership agreement with Nashoba Networks, Cabletron offers token ring customers increased performance, simplified management and reduced cost-of-ownership. The strategy reduces complexity by allowing customers to fully apply switching technology and management tools throughout the enterprise, without having to replace existing wiring infrastructures and network interface cards. "Cabletron has strategically positioned itself to migrate token ring accounts to new switched virtual networking capabilities," said Melissa Morales, analyst, Datapro Information Services See Information Systems. Group. "With over 80,000 MMAC MMAC Multimedia Mobile Access Communication MMAC Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce MMAC Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center MMAC Mutated in Multiple Advanced Cancers MMAC Multi Media Access Center (Cabletron) chassis in the field, Cabletron is also the only vendor that has committed to develop Token Ring switching capabilities for its existing installed base of intelligent hubs." Under Cabletron's OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and agreement with Nashoba, Cabletron will OEM Nahoba's Concord Token Ring switch, an 8/16 port device for both backbone and workgroup switch applications. The switch will be private-labeled, marketed and directly supported by Cabletron as the TSX-1620, with a 90 day availability and per-port cost of $1,600 (U.S. dollars). The TSX-1620 is one of the first Token Ring switches to offer enhanced network management through SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. and RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities. , as well as optional redundant fan and power supply features normally found in modular chassis. To address high-end, data center switching applications, Cabletron will develop a multiport Token Ring switch for the MMAC-Plus. Based on the company's Intel i960-based PLUS Architecture, the module will reside on the MMAC-Plus' high-speed, Internal Network Bus (INB INB Inbound INB Internal Network Bus INB Intranodal Buffer INB Install Busy INB Input Buffer Control Block ) backplane. Token Ring switching for the MMAC-Plus will be available by the first half of 1996. For the company's Multi Media Access Center (MMAC) chassis, Cabletron is internally developing a multiport switch, which will provide modular uplinks to high speed networking technologies including FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. and ATM. Token Ring switching for the MMAC will be available by the end of 1995. All of Cabletron's Token Ring switching products will be manageable under the company's SPECTRUM for Open Systems enterprise management platform, with virtual LAN capabilities provided under the company's Virtual Network Services and SecureFast Switching framework. Market Overview Recent surveys conducted by Sage Research, a Boston-based research firm, state that 85 percent of respondents expect to grow their campus token ring networks over the next 18-24 months. Over 60 percent of respondents indicated plans to implement token ring switching. According to International Data Corporation (IDC, Analysis of Intelligent Hub Market, May 1994), token ring connections are projected to grow to an installed base of 19.6 million by 1998. Headquartered in Rochester, N.H., Cabletron Systems employs over 4,900 people and is the worldwide modular hub market leader.-(a) Cabletron is ISO (1) See ISO speed.
