Cabletron competed with Bay Networks (Nortel), FORE Systems See Marconi. , Hitatchi, Olicom and 3Com in the evaluation.

"Cabletron is pleased to receive top honors for this important ATM challenge, not only from Network Computing but also from its sister publication InternetWeek," said Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:

"It's the combination of Cabletron's SmartSwitches, SmartSwitch Router and SPECTRUM management working together that makes this an award-winning solution."

"Cabletron's solution showed that the vendor had invested considerable development effort in ATM technology during the past year. MPOA was up and running on the Cabletron network, and we were impressed to see how well Cabletron had integrated Gigabit Ethernet into its solution. In addition, Cabletron's surprisingly competitive hardware pricing should help level the playing field against competitors," according to Network Computing's "Putting Enterprise ATM Solutions to Work" article. Network Computing also commented, "We found the SPECTRUM (ATM Services Manager) package to be more intuitive than 3Com's Transcend offering. Likewise, SPECTRUM offered far more functionality than the ForeView software we tested...."

For the ATM test, Cabletron deployed its SmartSwitch 6500 for the ATM backbone, the SmartSwitch Router for high-speed routing, its SmartSwitch 2500 for workgroup ATM switching and the SmartSwitch 2000 for Ethernet/Fast Ethernet switching at the edge of the network.
