Cabletron's Spectrum widens integrated application, systems and network management offering with Seagate AppControl; Cabletron will resell Seagate AppControl for distributed, policy-based application and systems management capabilities.

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1996--In order to enhance its one-stop shopping for world-class application, systems, and network management, Cabletron Systems Inc. (NYSE: CS), the leading provider of high-performance intranet solutions, will resell and provide support for the Seagate Software AppControl application and systems management product.

Along with SPECTRUM's recent announcement to resell and support BMC Software's PATROL and Metrix's WinWatch, this latest move is designed to provide customers with tightly integrated best-of-breed systems management options.

Seagate AppControl is a renamed version of the Atrium Extendible Management System, originally developed by Calypso Software Systems, Inc., a former SPECTRUM partner acquired by Seagate Software earlier this year. As with PATROL and WinWatch, Seagate AppControl is integrated with SPECTRUM at the Knowledge Base, allowing seamless management of applications, systems and network devices from one console.

Seagate AppControl brings important distributed policy-based application management for the UNIX environment to SPECTRUM's systems management package. The new version includes a collection of Management Options (MOs), which perform such tasks as monitoring a system's CPU, file systems, memory, system processes and logging, and is user extendible to meet customers' specific needs. The new version adds a Software Distribution MO, which defines software packages for distribution from a central location to remote systems, and Web MO, which track important Web server statistics such as clients per day/per hour, hits per day/per hour, and total number of errors.

Seagate AppControl incorporates a policy-based management feature which allows administrators to create rules about how, when and where applications and devices are managed within specified policy groups. Policy groups can be define in ways such as by business organizations (finance, marketing, etc.), geographic location, or equipment users (such as all graphics applications users).

Seagate AppControl is also integrated with other Seagate Software products such as the Seagate NerveCenter Pro event correlation software, which has also been integrated with the SPECTRUM platform.

Seagate AppControl will be available in the fourth quarter of this year through both Seagate Software and Cabletron for $15,000 U.S. per license for a single user interface. Each additional user interface is $1,000 U.S. AppControl runs on Solaris, SunOS and Silicon Graphics ITRIX platforms. Seagate AppControl agents can be installed on Solaris, SunOS, IRIX, IBM AIX and HP-UX nodes.
