Cabletron's New SmartSwitches Combine Performance of Switching With Cost Benefits of Shared-Media Hubs.

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1997--

Includes First Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

(networking) Fast Ethernet - A version of Ethernet developed in the 1990s(?) which can carry 100 Mbps compared with standard Ethernet's 10 Mbps. It requires upgraded network cards and hubs.

Cabletron's new "MicroLAN" products offer customers a cost-effective alternative to providing dedicated switch connections to every desktop. Users can be easily segmented into small shared-access workgroups interconnected by a high-speed 10/100 internal switch fabric. This strategy complements Cabletron's customer commitment to make networking simpler by reducing the number of users or servers per switched LAN segment A section of a local area network that is used by a particular workgroup or department and separated from the rest of the LAN by a bridge, router or switch. Networks are divided into multiple segments for security and to improve traffic flow by filtering out packets that are not destined , increasing network availability and reliability.

All of Cabletron's MicroLAN products support 48 ports of connectivity, with users segmented into separate groups of up to twelve users each. Up to 240 separate Ethernet or Fast Ethernet ports can be supported in a single SmartSwitch 6000 chassis.

Two new technologies have been introduced, the first offers Fast Ethernet services, while the second allows customers to deploy low-cost 10Mb Ethernet. Through auto-negotiation, the Fast Ethernet products simultaneously support both 10 and 100 Mb technologies, allowing customers to use the same product to migrate to Fast Ethernet.

The products can be uplinked to high-speed LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network  backbone technologies such as Fast Ethernet, ATM, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  and Frame Relay. MicroLAN products for the SmartSwitch 6000 support up to ten high-speed uplinks, while the standalone solutions offer three uplinks.

New MicroLAN Products for the SmartSwitch 6000

-- Fast Ethernet MicroLAN Module for the SmartSwitch 6000 (6H123-50) - designed for high-density environments that require significant bandwidth, the 6H123-50 provides the functionality of a Fast Ethernet switch with the efficiencies of a shared-access hub. -- Ethernet MicroLAN Module for the SmartSwitch 6000 (6E123-50) - also designed for high-density wiring closet environments, the 6E123-50 provides "switch-like" performance enhancements and a migration path to a fully switched network or high-speed backbone.

New MicroLAN Products for the Workgroup

-- SmartSwitch 2110 - Standalone Fast Ethernet MicroLAN (2H43-51) - designed to address high-bandwidth connectivity requirements at the workgroup, the SmartSwitch 2110 interconnects up to 48 users using shared Fast Ethernet. Segmented groups are interconnected via a high-speed 10/100 internal switching fabric. -- SmartSwitch 2100 - Standalone Ethernet MicroLAN (2E43-51) - also designed for workgroup connectivity requirant improvements in throughput performance, without requiring the expense of dedicated switched Ethernet cility
