Cable marketing executive plans network aimes at broad cross-section of Hispanics

A Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  man is forming a new cable television network - aimed at young Hispanics - that he hopes to debut across the country next spring.

John Figueroa John Joseph Maria Figueroa (1920-1999) was a white Jamaican poet and educator, of Galician origin.

Figueroa taught at the School of Education of the University of the West Indies Mona campus, and at universities in Britain, Africa, and the United States.
, the majority owner and president of Cable Television Nacional, said the network will be based in Los Angeles but programming will come from various sources around the country.

The network is expected to reach between 500,000 and 700,000 Spanish-speaking households next spring. An exact date has not yet been determined, said Figueroa.

By the end of its first year, he said he hopes to boost subscriber levels to 2.2 million. Figueroa has been in the cable television business for 17 years in various marketing positions, including jobs with Spanish-speaking stations.

Figueroa explained that, unlike other stations, CTN's all-Spanish programming will be geared to a cross-section of Hispanics rather than at specific groups of Spanish-speaking Americans.

 funding for the project was provided by Black Entertainment Television, a Washington D.C.-based cable television network. But Figueroa said he is the project's principal investor, with a 60 percent stake.

Figueroa said he is currently negotiating with two private investors, whose names he would not disclose, for additional funding. The network, he said, will remain minority-owned.
