At that time, Cable and Wireless Panama expected their newly expanded network to meet their customers' near-term requirements for digital services. However, the network rollout was so smooth, and customer demand so great, that Cable and Wireless ordered an additional $2.5 million worth of UAS equipment. Both contracts were placed through Nortel Networks (Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario, www.nortelnetworks.com) A world leader in telecommunications products, which includes switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony  CALA CALA Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse

Like the majority of established carriers worldwide, Cable and Wireless Panama relies on a large installed base of copper wire to deliver the "last mile" of service to its customers. GDC's Universal Access System will enable Cable and Wireless to provide ATM, frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  and other advanced digital services while maximizing the use of their existing copper loop infrastructure.

The new ATM network, utilizing Nortel Networks and General DataComm equipment, will allow Cable and Wireless Panama to consolidate existing services including frame relay, SNA/SDLC and X.25, as well as voice, video and high speed Internet traffic over 155 Mbps backbone trunks. Cable and Wireless Panama is moving rapidly to offer frame relay and ATM services to take advantage of the improved service quality and reduced operational costs.

"The Universal Access System's modular design allows cards supporting IDSL See DSL. , HDSL See DSL.

, V.34 and data over voice traffic (DATX) to interface to the same shelf," explained James O'Meara, GDC vice president and general manager of the Network Access Division "If Cable and Wireless Panama had chosen multiple access vendors, up to four different shelves would have been required to handle the traffic individually," he continued.

Not only do customers benefit by a 4-to-1 savings on rack space, but also by a 4-to-1 reduction of UNIX-based network controllers since each traffic type would have required a separate controller if purchased from different vendors. Built-in features enhance the controller's reliability by helping to isolate sectional faults and enable fast service restoral. The management of the GDC access system has been further consolidated into an integral part of the Nortel Networks management system.

"GDC has worked hard to meet the compressed timeframe required for this project. The average turn around time from order placement to shipment was 30 days," stated Mr. Ralph Castellanos, GDC vice president of Latin America Operations

GDC's recently introduced Universal Access System has proven very popular with many Latin American telephone companies including CANTV CANTV Compañía Anónima Nacional Teléfonos de Venezuela  of Venezuela, EMTELCO of Colombia and Telemig of Brazil. The UAS provides carriers and companies with the flexibility to provide a wide range of data speeds, traffic configurations and service offerings, which includes internet access for their customers - all over their existing copper network.
