This is Cable & Wireless IDC's fifth data center in Japan and follows the recent opening of its second Osaka data center on April 9, 2001.

The new Tokyo facility has a capacity of approximately 13,000 square meters (139,000 square feet) of hosting space and is connected directly to the 1.2 Gbps Internet backbone (communications, networking) Internet backbone - High-speed networks that carry Internet traffic.

These communications networks are provided by companies such as AT&T, GTE, IBM, MCI, Netcom, Sprint, UUNET and consist of high-speed links in the T1, T3, OC1 and OC3 ranges.

The existing data centers have more than 4,000 servers installed and daily traffic through the centers is around 4 terabytes per day.

The opening of the new facility in Tokyo is integral to supporting Cable & Wireless' strategy to be a leading provider of leading-edge hosting solutions on a global scale. Cable & Wireless' new Managed Hosting Solutions offerings, which are available in the US and UK, will be available in Europe and Japan by the middle of 2001. Within Japan, Managed Hosting Solutions will be provided within the Tokyo ISC.

The Tokyo ISC is also expected to perform as a hub for providing hosting services in the Asia Pacific region and like other Cable & Wireless' data centers is connected directly to the company's high performance global IP network.
