A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor. , which will enable Cable & Wireless to filter undesirable IP traffic and block denial of service attacks without affecting the high-speed performance of its global IP network.

Cable & Wireless is one of the first Internet backbone (communications, networking) Internet backbone - High-speed networks that carry Internet traffic.

These communications networks are provided by companies such as AT&T, GTE, IBM, MCI, Netcom, Sprint, UUNET and consist of high-speed links in the T1, T3, OC1 and OC3 ranges.
providers to deploy Juniper Networks Internet Processor II ASIC, the most advanced IP processing chip to date, to enhance security functions and increase analysis of network operations.

in preventative network security," said Robert Flood, chief technology officer at Cable & Wireless. "Typically, this type of filtering has not been available because of the performance degradation it presents to networks. By deploying Juniper's security technology, Cable & Wireless is one of the first companies to now have the capability to filter IP traffic on an immense scale with no impact to the performance of our network. That is extremely beneficial to our network and customers."

With the deployment of the Juniper Networks Internet Processor II ASIC, Cable & Wireless will be able to filter IP traffic anywhere at any circuit speed and block denial of service attacks and potentially any unauthorized traffic that crosses the core of Cable & Wireless' network.

In addition, the logging and sampling capabilities of Internet Processor II will allow better visibility into network trends and traffic patterns. With these security enhancements, Cable & Wireless will be able to respond to security issues faster and more effectively, as well as assisting peers when they might experience security issues.

"The Cable & Wireless network is now experiencing a 100-fold improvement in packet filtering See packet filter. , giving them the ability to prevent unwanted traffic from affecting their network and their customers," said Pradeep Sindhu Pradeep Sindhu (1953, Mumbai, India) is the serving Chief Technical Officer of Juniper Networks Inc.

Sindhu founded Juniper Networks along with Dennis Ferguson, and Bjorn Liencres in February 1996 in California.
, chief technology officer at Juniper Networks. "We are pleased that Cable & Wireless recognizes the power of the Internet Processor II ASIC and has chosen to be one of our first customers to deploy this technology."

Last month Cable & Wireless set an Internet milestone by activating the world's first wire-rate clear channel OC-192c 10Gbps IP/MPLS IP/MPLS Internet Protocol/Multi-Protocol Label Switching  circuit using Juniper Networks M160 routers. Juniper Networks Internet Processor II ASIC is being deployed with the M160 router platform across Cable & Wireless' global IP network. Cable & Wireless will retrofit all other currently deployed Juniper routers with the new Internet Processor II ASIC.

Cable & Wireless also announced today the acquisition of a majority holding in IPERGY, a Brussels based company providing a pan European fiber optic Internet backbone supporting a range of IP and co-location services. This acquisition will bring forward Cable & Wireless' roll out of IP services in Europe by nine months.
