Today Insp Mick Slater praised the unnamed cabbie, who called them over his radio.

He said officers had become increasingly worried for the child's safety as the hours ticked by.

"We took the lad in a police car back to his parents," said Insp Slater.

"As you can imagine both they and his grandmother were delighted to see him and very relieved the whole ordeal was over."
