The latest recording of Cabaret is not the Broadway revival but a two-CD set with Jonathan Pryce as the emcee, Maria Friedman as Sally Bowles, and most especially Judi Dench. Three decades after playing Sally in London, Dench sings a bitterly memorable Fraulein Schneider. Her wrenching delivery of "What Would You Do?" (in the face of Nazism) is an eloquent expression of an ordinary person's dilemma in confronting tyranny. As with the current Broadway hit, the inclusion of added songs from both the film and the 1987 Broadway revival is a bonus.
