CYPRUS MINERALS SELECTS JEFFREY CLEVENTER TO BE
 COPPER SUBSIDIARY SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
DENVER, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Cyprus Minerals Company (NYSE: CYM) today named a new senior vice president of its Cyprus Copper Company subsidiary, Jeffrey G. Clevenger, age 42. Clevenger joins Cyprus from Phelps Dodge Corporation, where he was responsible for the Morenci mining complex in Arizona, serving as president of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc.
At Cyprus, Clevenger will be responsible for Cyprus' four major copper production locations in Arizona, as well as the Thompson Creek molybdenum operation in Idaho. Managers of those operations will report to Clevenger, who will report to F. Steven Mooney, President of Cyprus Copper Company. Cyprus Copper is based in Phoenix.
"The addition of Jeff Clevenger to our Company is a strategic move designed to take advantage of the many things he has done in the copper business and to help us meet both the current and anticipated needs of Cyprus," said Milton H. Ward, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cyprus Minerals. "Our specific objectives in copper include overall performance improvement, cost reduction, and growth through internal and external expansion. Jeff's hands-on experience and management skills will be invaluable. During his tenure at the Morenci complex, Morenci Mining achieved major enhancements to the property, including in-pit crushing, conveying, and elimination of rail haulage in the mine, significant expansion of solvent extraction-electrowinning capacity, and other improvements which collectively provided a meaningful increase in total annual copper production."
A 1973 mining engineering graduate of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Clevenger joined Phelps Dodge in 1973 as an engineer, working in various positions of increasing responsibility at that company's Tyrone, New Mexico, copper operation until 1986, when he transferred to Morenci. In 1987 he served as the assistant general manager in charge of operations at Phelps Dodge's Chino Mines Company in New Mexico. He returned to Morenci in October, 1988, and in November, 1989, was chosen to head the Morenci operations as President of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc.
Cyprus Minerals is a major producer of copper, coal, lithium and molybdenum. The company also produces gold, iron ore and zinc.
