CYBERsitter Internet Content Rating System Introduced.

SANTA BARBARA Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1999--

Solid Oak Software Inc. has announced a new rating system for the Internet that actually works.

The new rating system analyzes Web pages in real time for content that would indicate that it is inappropriate for children. Based on the popular CYBERsitter filtering software program, the new system uses the same intelligent content recognition techniques the product has used since its initial release in 1995.

Brian Milburn, president of Solid Oak, this new system fills a tremendous need for a viable ratings system. The system employs a new protocol that allows applications to query a server with a URL URL

or IP address, and it will quickly analyze the content of the submitted address. The server will then immediately return a numerical rating indicating its content.

This technology could be integrated into browsers, search engines, DNS servers A dedicated server or a service within a server that provides DNS name resolution in an IP network. It turns names for Web sites and network resources into numeric IP addresses. DNS servers are used in large companies, in all ISPs and within the DNS system in the Internet, a vital service , routers, proxy servers Also called a "proxy," it is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver. Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers are used to help prevent an attacker from invading the private network. , or used by service providers.

"I think the most immediate use for this system would be by search engines. They simply need to do a better job of identifying porn sites. People, even adults, are sick and tired of doing a search on an innocent term and getting back 14 pages of porn links," said Milburn.

"Search engines can use this system to index these sites under adult categories and allow users to exclude them from their search results if they like."

, an Internet rating system seeking worldwide acceptance, is a useless system, according to Milburn. "It has never worked and never will. The CYBERsitter rating system requires no participation from the Web site publisher, unlike PICS, and a rating for the site is obtainable even if it was created 2 seconds ago," Milburn added.

"We have 5 years of experience designing filters and we can correctly identify about 99 percent of all adult sites. It is very accurate."

Solid Oak has designed this system so that the protocol could easily be adopted by the Internet community worldwide as an open standard. Other filtering companies, and even special interest groups, could provide their own ratings bureaus and users would be able to subscribe to Verb 1. subscribe to - receive or obtain regularly; "We take the Times every day"
