CYBERSPORTS TAKING THE OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE TO A NEW UNDERSTANDING.

Byline: - Tom Hoffarth

Welcome to what Tom Feuer likes to call Olympics 2.0.

Feuer, the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
graduate who ran the NBC NBC
 in full National Broadcasting Co.

Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. (GE), and Westinghouse and was the first U.S. company to operate a broadcast network.
Summer Olympics site from Sydney, Australia, two years ago, returns to oversee both the official Olympic and NBC sites for the upcoming Winter Games

 with a simple approach.

``Sydney was a great lab experiment, and the most important thing we learned was the stuff was too advanced,'' he said from his MSNBC.com offices in Redmond, Wash., before heading out to Salt Lake City. ``Most people didn't have the bandwidth connections then and still don't now, to do all the video streaming See streaming video and video stream.  and other things we tried. They were really just interested in the TV schedules for the most part. So we've taken that to heart.''

Meaning, rather than 200 pages of features on the bobsled, the emphasis on the two sites from Salt Lake - www.nbcolympics.com and saltlake2002.com - will be on the broadcast listings in three different ways, interactive judging on figure skating figure skating

 and better, faster results.

The other major change is in who runs the operation. Quokka quokka

a small, nocturnal wallaby (Setonyx brachyurus) which is especially sensitive to nutritional myopathy. Called also Rottnest quokka.
Sports produced the sites in Australia but then went bankrupt last April. MSNBC MSNBC Microsoft/National Broadcasting Company , run in part by Microsoft, won the bidding to take over the two sites, as well as Olympics.com, which feeds into the Salt Lake City site.

``We're trying to make the sites more a companion of the telecast,'' said Feuer, who will have a staff of about 70 people working on both sites as much as 21 hours a day. ``And, being on the West Coast, we know about the prime-time delays involved, so we're trying to make the experience even more useful even with the time factor.''

Which means that events might be done by the time they're shown in the 7:30-to-11 p.m. window on TV, but the Web sites will be careful not to give away the news right away on the front pages.

The interactive element with figure skating might be the most popular place as the Games move on. The judges' scores for each skater will be posted and you'll be allowed to vote yourself and compare the results with other users to see how the audience votes.

Other figure-skating applications include instructional video on basic jumps, spins and footwork.

More than 10 million users are expected to view either of the sites for the next month.
