CYBERSPORTS NOTHING PETTY ABOUT THESE PETITIONS.

Byline: - Tom Hoffarth

They want Dale Earnhardt's No. 3 retired, the Daytona 500 and Winston Cup Series renamed after the late driver and other sorts of eternal tributes. So they've started petitions, and interest has picked up very quickly on a free Web site created to push these ideas called PetitionOnline.com.

A NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  fan named Anthony Thies started the number-retirement petition (www.petitiononline.com/DaleE3.html), then amended it to have the No. 3 put on the pace car of all future races so that ``he may always lead the race.'' Through Sunday, nearly 200,000 e-signatures were gathered.

Dennis Michelsen, a senior staff writer at NASCAR fan site www.frontstretch.com, started another petition to get the Winston all-star race at Lowe's Motor Speedway Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway) is a speedway in Concord, North Carolina, north of Charlotte. It features a 1.5 mile long quad-oval track that seats 167,000 people, with room for 50,000 more spectators in the infield.  in Concord, N.C., renamed ``The Dale Earnhardt Sr. Memorial presented by Winston.'' Another fan, Jo Lynn Francis, has started to get signatures calling for a U.S. postage stamp for Earnhardt. Would it be a 3-cent stamp?

The fun is finding other sports-related petitions currently up on the site. There's a push to get Barry Switzer elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, one to ABC ABC

Heisley has until Thursday to submit an application if he wants to move the team in time for next season.
