CYBERSPORT : MUTINY AT HALFTIME: ANYONE HEAR ABOUT THE GREAT SOUND-OUT?

Byline: Tom Hoffarth

It might have been a moot point moot point n. 1) a legal question which no court has decided, so it is still debatable or unsettled. 2) an issue only of academic interest. (See: moot)  to some, but to the National Sports Fans Union, turning off the sound during halftime of Sunday's Super Bowl was a mute decision.

Hoping to demonstrate a quiet yet clear message that ``the greed in sports has gotten out of control and changes must be made,'' according to according to

co-founder Steve Goldstein, the NSFU rallied its 10,000-plus membership through its Web site (http://www.nsfu.com) to hit the mute button during halftime in defiance of the Super Bowl sponsors.

``We have to let corporations know that we won't be watching your commercials and we won't be buying your products,'' Goldstein explained. ``In the big business of sports, the fan comes last. How can the average fan afford $400 for a Super Bowl ticket? No one cares, because it's not about fans anymore and that's why the NSFU was created.''

So there.

With a $6 registration at the NSFU Web site, you're granted votes on ``mission revolts'' and access to ``closed strategy sessions'' - plus a club window decal and ``power to the sports fan'' stickers.

But there's a warning that these people mean business. The site explicitly states: ``If you're just going to wear our NSFU baseball cap for `fashion' . . . don't join.'' Also: ``If you are not going to call radio sports talk shows and communicate our cause, keep your six dollars.''

The Miami-based organization was launched in mid-December.

More convergence: The Football Network (http://www.footballnetwork.com) has merged resources with the Internet's most extensive Web site run by the fans (http://www.NFLfans.com) to cross-promote in hopes of helping each other's cause.
