Hungry to learn more about the wondrous machine that rests atop her tidy, 1950s-style desk, the Canyon Country grandmother has signed up for a two-night, women-only computer course at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

``My family tried for several years to get me a computer so we could e- mail each other. I kept saying I don't want one, I don't need one. But now, I spend all my time playing solitaire,'' she said.

Hearing about the college class from a friend, Underwood said it was the perfect opportunity to learn more than the basics, such as troubleshooting and using the programs that came with her computer.

The two-night Ladies' Nite Boot Camp Software from Apple that enables an Intel x86-based Macintosh to host the Windows XP operating system. Boot Camp is used to divide the hard disk into Windows and Mac partitions, to install the necessary drivers and to create a dual boot environment.  course will meet on consecutive Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. this week and July 17, and again on July 31 and Aug. 7. The enrollment fee is $29.

Jennifer Hauss, director of community extension at College of the Canyons, said the ladies-only format is an extension of last summer's girls- only pilot program.

``Results of a study showed that young girls learned technology and computer skills better in gender-specific classes. We expanded that to father/son (classes) and ladies' night A ladies' night (sometimes ladies night) is a promotional event, often at a bar or nightclub, where female patrons get a reduced price for admission or goods. However there have been cases when females are not admitted under this scheme as they have been deemed as butches. ,'' Hauss said.

Another girls class - open to 8- to 14-year-olds - is offered from Aug. 6-9. The $49 class will meet from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Hauss said last month's father/son classes were successful, but two girls' classes were canceled because of low enrollment. Spots are still available for both the girls' and women's courses.

``It's fun. The teachers and the monitors will make you feel comfortable,'' Hauss said. ``It will be sort of a bonding experience for women who want to get up on these skills.''

Underwood has relied on pointers from her son and grandson, but she hopes the summer course will open up the endless potential of Web surfing Refers to jumping from page to page on the Web. Just as in "TV channel surfing," where one clicks the remote to go from channel to channel, the hyperlink on Web pages makes it easy to jump from one page to another.  and cyber-convenience.

``I know how to e-mail, to turn it on and off,'' she said. ``I'd just like to know more about what it can do.''
