Mosher was recognized for distinguished service throughout his 28-year career with CYA. He is known as a dedicated instructor, who in addition to teaching culinary arts, leads his students by example towards teamwork, accountability and ethical behavior. His nomination read (in part), "Don is the ultimate professional... inspiring his students to make sound decisions in future choices."

his belief in what and who he teaches. Murphy has always expected "excellence from his peers, his supervisors, and his students." A former Youth Authority ward presented the "Educator of the Year" honors to Murphy. In addressing the audience, the young man, now a college graduate and a former Fulbright scholar, indicated he has completed the circle, by returning to the Youth Authority to teach.

The awards were bestowed during the CYA's Eighth Annual Excellence in Education ceremony to honor several categories of CYA staff and volunteers, who provide education to the "toughest" students in California. The nomination process is peer-initiated and the selection process involves both internal and external judging. The recipients were announced at an "academy award" style program, which was attended by nearly 200 individuals. (See www.cya.ca.gov for a full listing identifying all award recipients by category and their contact information.)

"I extend my congratulations and appreciation to all the nominees, the finalists, and the recipients," said CYA Director Jerry L. Harper. "You represent what is best about the Youth Authority... and you make a difference in the lives of many."

The CYA's Superintendent of Education Dorrine Davis praised the efforts of Youth Authority educators saying, "These individuals are our greatest resource... it is an honor to recognize them as some of the very best of the dedicated and talented people who daily provide education services to a challenging student body."
