team the day before, Stanford displayed the necessary survival skills while on the brink of elimination at the College World Series.

The Cardinal, the last remaining Pac-10 team following UCLA's early exit, won with strong pitching and defense in an 11-4 victory Tuesday before 11,000 at Rosenblatt Stadium.

``Stanford's pitching staff and defense are as good as any team in the country,'' Auburn coach Hal Baird said.

Those are two qualities the Bruins lacked most during their brief visit, but the Cardinal seems to always have in abundance.

After Auburn roughed up Cardinal starter Brent Hoard for four quick runs in 2-2/3 innings, Stanford merely went to reliever Jeff Austin.

The skinny sophomore, already rated one of the top-10 prospects in next year's draft, pitched 6-1/3 innings without allowing a run. He had already pitched four shutout innings against Auburn last Friday in the Cardinal's 8-3 victory.

``I think I wasn't that sharp today,'' Austin said. ``I just worked on hitting my spots.''

When Austin wasn't foiling Auburn (50-17), Stanford's infield was vacuuming up nearly everything hit on the ground.

The Cardinal (45-19) now have the difficult task of sweeping two games from undefeated Louisiana State, which routed Stanford 10-5 Sunday. LSU LSU Louisiana State University

He is considered by many to be one of the finest coaches in the game. In his thirty years at Stanford, he has compiled an impressive 1,235-597-5 record.  joked.

Cardinal catcher Jon Schaeffer of Harvard-Westlake continued to struggle at the plate (he's hitting .100 in the series) but made some nice defensive plays, including catching a foul ball on the edge of the Auburn dugout.
