CWG core group yet to be given insurance cover.IT IS yet another case of apathy by the Sports Authority of India The Sports Authority of India (SAI) is a body set up by the Government of India. It was created in 1984 to help promote sport throughout the country. It helps run the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala. ( SAI). Despite more than a year since the shortlisting of 1250 athletes and 250 coaches in 17 disciplines for the Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated , till date neither the athletes nor the coaches have been insured. What is more appalling is the fact that so far no insurance company has even been identified, despite the core group being formed more than a year ago. That is really sad considering such a large number of the country's top sportspersons are training in various centres around the country. These include places like Patiala, Sonepat, Bangalore, Gandhinagar, Guwahati and Baliwadi. " I really cannot understand the SAI's apathy. They just do not seem to be bothered about the well being of the athletes. Abroad, once a team is shortlisted, one of the first things First Things is a monthly ecumenical journal concerned with the creation of a "religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society" (First Things website). which is taken care of is medical insurance. Also there is a high risk of a sportsperson sportsperson Noun a person who plays sports getting injured during the intensive training sessions. There have been instances of some athletes getting injured during the practice sessions. So one really fails to understand how the SAI can allow such a thing to happen. Confirming this, Prabir Kishen, special officer, 2010 Commonwealth Games, conceded that the insurance of the athletes and their coaches had so far not been taken care of. " Yes, I can confirm that the insurance component has still not been worked out. It was in some sort of a limbo." He did not elaborate on the reasons for the delay in providing the insurance cover. But then he went on to add that the process of shortlisting the insurance company was on. " I can assure you that we have shortlisted about four companies for carrying out this exercise." He also said that the insurance formalities would be completed in a couple of months time. " I can confirm that all the insurance formalities will be completed in a couple of months time. There is no doubt about that," he assured. Asked what took the SAI such a long time to organise the insurance cover for the sportspersons, he did not answer that query.
